#Course: "Processing and Analysis of #Fluorescence #Microscopy Images" at @IPMontevideo
At the Institut Pasteur de Montevideo (Uruguay) from February 29th to March 11th, 2016.
The course combines theory and practice on image processing focusing on fluorescence microscopy images. The course is divided in two parts, the first one presents the theory and methods to understand the algorithms for image processing included in most of the commonly used software packages such as Icy or Fiji. This part is taught by top researchers and developers working in the biomedical image processing field, using material and biological examples. The second part is a hands-on course where the student will applied the analyzed methods (or new ones) to their own image related research projects.
We plan to populate the course with students from two different disciplines such as those with biological background and those trained in quantitative sciences such as engineering/mathematics/physics. The goal is to create small groups of students from different areas and combine their expertise to tackle a single problem.
Invited instructors
* Alexandre Dufour, Institut Pasteur Paris, France
* Stéphane Dallongeville, Institut Pasteur Paris, France
* Johannes Schindelin, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA
* Steffen Hartel, Universidad de Chile, Chile
Organizers
* Federico Lecumberry, Institut Pasteur de Montevideo/Universidad de la República, Uruguay
* Pablo Aguilar, Institut Pasteur de Montevideo, Uruguay/Universidad de San Martín, Argentina
* Flavio Zolessi, Institut Pasteur de Montevideo/Universidad de la República, Uruguay
Aim
The global aim of this course is to equip students to address fluorescence microscopy imaging questions from a comprehensive and quantitative perspective.
At the end of the course, the students should have gained basic abilities to:
1. Precisely define a fluorescence microscopy imaging question and the type of data needed to answer it.
2. Select an effective set of processing and analytical tools and apply them in a systematized and comprehensive manner.
3. Design, modify or adapt a tool or set of tools to improve image processing and/or analysis performance.
The course is designed to foster two types of students: those with biological background and those trained in quantitative sciences such as engineering/mathematics/physics. Theoretical and practical sessions will be organized in a way that the skills of one group of students will help the other group.
The course will be in English.
This activity is supported by the Reseau International des Instituts Pasteur (RIIP); the International Centre for Genetics Engineering and Biotechnology; and the Institut Pasteur de Montevideo.
Applications
25 students will be selected among the applications. The course will provide financial support for the students, covering registration fees, and all local expenses (lodging, per diem and local transportation) for those coming from abroad.
The application deadline is December 23, 2015. The results will be announced by December 29, 2015.
The application form, activity program, contact information and other details can be found at the web site of the course http://pasteur.edu.uy/pafmi2016

#Post-Doc / #PhD positions: NMR studies of interactions, dynamics and function in #chaperones
Grenoble, Franc (team leader Paul Schanda) has openings for
post-doctoral/PhD researchers to work on elucidating interactions and
dynamics in chaperone complexes, in a research project funded by
the European Research Council (ERC project ProtDyn2Function).
We are seeking candidates for a project that aims at characterizing
molecular interactions and dynamics in complexes of large
chaperones with unfolded/misfolded protein targets. In this project we
use the solid- as well as solution-state NMR to probe molecular
interactions between a hundreds-of-kilodalton large chaperone
complex and "client" proteins, as well as structural and dynamical
features of these complexes. The protein targets are already well
established in our hands, and existing NMR
characterizations/assignments as well as high-resolution EM data
allow rapidly focusing on the biological/biophysical questions.
We are seeking highly motivated and creative candidates with a strong
ability to work effectively and congenially with other group members.
For post-doctoral candidates, experience in biomolecular NMR
spectroscopy, as well as protein production and purification are
required. Strong background in chaperones would be an advantage,
but not required. Experience in one of the following research areas are
a strong plus: programming and data analysis (e.g. python
programming), biochemical characterization of proteins and functional
assays, spectroscopic techniques. Applications for a PhD position are
also welcome; experience in NMR spectroscopy is not mandatory for
the PhD position, and the successful candidate should be highly
motivated to learn state-of-the-art biomolecular solid-state NMR.
Experience in one of the following research areas are a strong plus:
programming and data analysis (e.g. python programming),
biochemical characterization of proteins and functional assays,
spectroscopic techniques.
The successful candidate will be part of a recently established
research team, hosted in the Structural Biology Institute (IBS), in one
of Europe´s most vibrant structural biology communities (centered
around the European Synchrotron Facility, the ILL neutron source,
EMBL Grenoble). Our group has access to brand-new NMR
equipment for both solution- and solid-state NMR in-house (2x600
MHz, 700, 850, 950 MHz with cryoprobes and fast-spinning MAS
probes), a state-of-the-art electron microscopy facility, as well as a
large panel of complementary biophysical techniques. The candidate
will benefit from extensive expertise on advanced isotope labeling,
solution- and solid-state NMR and biochemistry in the NMR group.
Grenoble is a pleasant mid-sized city located at the heart of the
French alps, with (public) transport connections to Paris (3 h), the
mediterranean and the nearby mountain resorts.
Applications, containing a detailed CV, a list of publications and a
clear statement of motivation, as well as names of 2-3 reference
persons should be sent via e-mail to paul.schanda@ibs.fr.

An opportunity to get involved in research in the Department of Genetic Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
We are seeking a highly motivated research fellow to join our laboratory to assist in the developing of next generation sequencing (NGS) methods with direct application in human health. The applicant will be involved in the preparation of NGS libraries using nanofluidic devices to improve the resolution and accuracy of whole genome de novo assemblies. Alternative she/he will be involved in the development of single-cell epigenetic mapping technologies or methylation sequencing with application in epigenome wide associations studies (EWAS). The project assignment will be based on both the applicant personal interest and also on the priorities of the lab at the time the intern joins our group. The participant's stay in the USA will be supported with a monthly salary of $ 1,800. At the time of the application the applicant must be college graduate. The applicant must be able to write and communicate in English. Molecular biology knowledge and familiarity with the work of experimentation in the laboratory bench are highly desirable. Those interested contact Dr. Alejandro Colaneri: colaneri@email.unc.edu
