Characterization of Trypanosoma brucei amino acid
transporters and their role for parasite growth or as drug
delivery systems
To work on the functional genomics of amino acid transporters in Trypanosoma
brucei . Like other unicellular parasites, T. brucei depend on the import of amino acids for their
primary metabolism. The project aims to:
• characterize T. brucei amino acid transport systems by heterologous expression in
S. cerevisiae and/or X. laevis oocytes studying their functional properties e.g.
substrate selectivity, affinity, etc.;
• evaluate their role(s) for parasite growth, development and pathogenicity (and as
potential drug delivery systems).
The international and interdisciplinary research environment at the Institute of Plant Sciences
( http://www.ips.unibe.ch) and the University of Bern offers an excellent opportunity for career
development.
We are looking for a motivated PhD student joining our research team. Salary will be
according to the Swiss National Science Foundation and is limited to 3 years. Starting at
earliest convenience. Applications (single pdf file) should include a curriculum vitae,
description of research interests and experience as well as name and address of two
